How to collect blood and feather samples for chicken DNA tests

We’re excited to announce a new video tutorial that makes collecting samples for chicken DNA testing easier than ever! Whether you’re a seasoned tester or just starting out, this video will guide you through the simple steps to prepare your samples for accurate and reliable results.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How to collect blood samples using filter paper or regular printer paper. Remember, use a tiny amount of blood. It might sound counterintuitive, but a smaller blood spot will make your DNA extraction more successful.
  • How to use freshly plucked feathers for DNA analysis. You will extract DNA from skin and blood cells that remain trapped in the tip of the feather, which is why the DNA extraction requires fresh feathers and might not work from molted ones.

Whether you’re using blood or freshly plucked feathers, the process is straightforward and simple. Just ensure a clean workspace, carefully add your small sample (a tiny piece of blood-spotted paper or the tip of a feather) to the provided DNA extraction buffer, use a toothpick to push the sample into the buffer, and you’re good to go!

To avoid cross-contamination, clean or change gloves and use a new disposable razor blade and toothpick for every sample.

Important Note: The techniques shown in this video apply to all of our avian DNA tests!
