Avian DNA Testing – How to Organize Your Lab

Ready to kick off your on-farm DNA lab? Learn how to structure your key work areas before testing begins. Remember, a well-organized workflow is the foundation of every successful DNA test!

PCR is extremely sensitive; even tiny amounts of unwanted DNA can cause false positive results. To reduce contamination risk, organize your workspace into three distinct zones:

Reagents Area: Dedicated for preparing the reagents only.

Sampling Area: Dedicated to sample preparation and DNA extraction (lysis).

PCR Area: Used only for amplification and result visualization (e.g., gel electrophoresis).

Watch this video for a step-by-step walkthrough on organizing your lab layout, including comprehensive checklists of the materials and reagents required for every station.
